Arrrr! Pirate Books!
Avast! International Talk Like a Pirate Day be sighted on the horizon! Tomorrow, September 19, be the day! Shiver me timbers! Batten down the hatches! Yo ho ho! Walk the plank!
Well, okay, you don't have to walk the plank. But still, you might want to belly up to the bookshelf and pull down a pirate book like one of these:
Picture books:
- Edward and the Pirates, by David McPhail. My total favorite pirate book, including the very important lesson that pirates should get their own library cards!
- Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies, by Carolyn Crimi, illustrated by John Manders. Another Pirates/Books combo, with an extremely erudite bunny thrown into the mix.
- How I Became a Pirate and Pirates Don't Change Diapers, both by Melissa Long with illustrations by the very hardy David Shannon.
- Fluffy, Scourge of the Sea, by Teresa Bateman, illustrated by Michael Chesworth. A poodle out of water vanquishes a crew of scurvy dogs.
Chapter books/Novels:
- Jack Plank Tells Tales, by Natalie Babbit. What does a pirate do when he's just not so good at pirateing?
- Pirate Diary: The Journal of Jake Carpenter, by Richard Platt and Chris Riddell. Along the lines of the Dear America books—only with illustrations—it's the fictional diary of a 9-year-old boy on an 18th century pirate ship.
- Airborn, by Kenneth Oppel. Two words: Sky pirates!
Nonfiction:
- Pirateology: A Pirate Hunter's Companion, by Captain William Lubber and Dubald Steer. Like the other books in the "ologies" series, this is a visual feast. The year it came out, I could've had a dozen copies in my library & they all would've been checked out all the time.
- Pirates, by John Matthews. Includes lots of cute (not that pirates are EVER cute) pull-out features, like a book of pirate slang, a treasure map, and even a Wanted poster for Blackbeard. .
- The Pirate Queen, by Emily Arnold McCully. The true story of Irish pirate Grania O'Malley.
